Want to make global change? Learn Twitter this week

I realize that it’s a intimidating and daunting for many of you, but we need to learn twitter. Jenna Elfman and others have suggested that TWITTER IS THE ONLY WAY TO KILL SB 277. So, why aren’t we doing it more…and more effectively??? More Call-To-Actions will be utilizing Twitter as we go forward.

Twitter quick tutorial (thanks to Lorien Cortez Bastick and Stephanie Brooker):

Sign up: You can sign up by visiting Twitter.com or by downloading the Twitter app onto your smartphone. Just follow the prompts after going to the website or downloading the app. Twitter functions like most other social media sites (e.g. Facebook and Instagram).

*Handle: Your username.

*Tweet: (the quill icon) A 140-character message. Because tweets are restricted in length people often use abbreviations of words such as ur for your, etc.

*Mention (@): A way to reference another user by her/his username in a tweet (e.g. @toniatkins). Users are notified when @mentioned. It’s a way to conduct discussions with other users in a public realm.

*Hashtag (#): A way to denote a topic of conversation or participate in a larger linked discussion (e.g. ‪#‎SB277‬, ‪#‎InformedConsent‬). A hashtag is a discovery tool that allows others to find your tweets, based on topics. You can also click on a hashtag to see all the tweets that mention it in real time — even from people you don’t follow. If enough people tweet a hashtag and it gets popular, it is considered “trending.”

*Feed: The stream of tweets you see on your homepage. It’s comprised of updates from users you follow.

*Retweet (RT): (the box with two clockwise arrows icon) Re-sharing or giving credit to someone else’s tweet for your followers to see.

*Favorite: (the star icon) It’s located under every tweet, and clicking this means you’re favoriting or “liking” a tweet.

*Reply: (the left arrow) Located under every tweet, it’s a tweet sent in direct response to the other tweet. It’s not the same thing as simply sending someone a tweet; rather, it’s to send someone a tweet in reply to a specific tweet. Your message will automatically be linked to the tweet you responded to, so when anyone else clicks on your tweet, it will expand to show the original message, too.

*Direct Message (DM): A private, 140-character message between two people. You can decide whether to accept a Direct Message from any Twitter user, or only from users you are following. You may only DM a user who follows you.

*Search: (the magnifying glass icon) This is the search function. It can be used to search for another Twitter member or for content.

Now go forth to search for and follow people with similar interests, friends, public figures, and/or those who are tweeting in Opposition of #SB277. Tweet @ them, Favorite their tweets, Retweet their tweets, and hopefully they will follow you back and do the same. Have fun!
